Reflection 1:

The cave is set into the hillside overlooking a deep valley, browned by summer drought and heat. Soot from centuries of shepherds’ fires blacken the ceiling. A soft carpet of dried sheep dung softens my steps as I make my way through the haze of black flies filling the air with bzzzzz. The smell and the dust on the rock ledges invite me to remain standing even though my legs long for relief due to the long walk.

Scripture: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. John 1:14

Reflection 2:

We are vulnerable. Places and settings that used to be safe are now filled with people “maintaining their distance” and/or wearing face-masks. Grocery stores. Even churches. Formerly safe havens like schools are closed. . Feeling vulnerable?

Imagine, if you can, that you are the Creator of the universe, surrounded by inexplicable glory and worship. (See Revelation 4-5.) Now imagine joining your creation, born in a cave-like enclosure filled with soot, dirt, dung and black flies. In addition, your enemies, including those “not of this world,” are seizing this opportunity to seek your death.

Vulnerability? Jesus, your friend, Lord and savior, knows all about it!

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
