Remember The Rock From Which You Were Cut

Scripture: Isaiah 51: 1-2, 4-5; Hebrews 11:8

Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many.

“Listen to me, my people; hear me, my nation: Instruction will go out from me; my justice will become a light to the nations. My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Think of it in this manner: Abraham is the root of an ancient and strong olive tree. And Israel—the children who came from Abraham’s lineage for centuries—are like branches filling this tree. The purpose of this tree was not the tree itself, but how it might provide a witness to the world, how it might bless every tree or nation. -Gary Burge, Calvin Theological Seminary

These passages always make me wonder, “How are we, the people of God, being a blessing to the nations? In most cases the term “nations” refers to those peoples outside of knowing the true God, His love, and his care for them. Yes, let’s take care of our own. And in doing so, recall that our most urgent calling is to those outside of grace.
