Day 41

Reflection

David’s Falls, a small underground flow of water breaking through the limestone cliffs and tumbling about 150 feet to a blue-green pool forms the oasis at En Gedi. Surrounded by brown-barren rock and heading toward the Dead Sea a couple of miles downstream, the oasis valley is a sliver of green and life in the midst of desert death. This spring has been flowing for more than 4000 years. Its source is rain falling in the Judah Mountains miles to the west. It is not dependent on the less than 5 inches of local rainfall per year.

Scripture: Isaiah 32:1-2

See, a king will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice. Each one will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.

John 7:37-39

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.

Reflection

When the Messiah comes, each believer will be like En Gedi. Two thoughts:

·A small amount of water, constantly flowing, makes a dramatic difference.

·Whatever is happening down here, has no effect on the source of water from above.

From where are we seeking spiritual nourishment? (The Dead Sea looks inviting from En Gedi, but nothing lives there!)

In the past two months, and certainly in the next two as well, God’s people have what is likely their greatest ever opportunity to be like “a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.”

If, we think of the Holy Spirit as merely a power, our constant thought will be, “How can I get more…,” but if we think Biblically…. about the Person of the Holy Spirit, our thought will rather be, “How can the Holy Spirit have more of me?” -R.A. Torrey What The Bible Teaches
