Five Thoughts On An Ancient Practice

Reflection

The Center For Action and Contemplation (https://cac.org/initiation-weekly-summary-2016-05-28/)

identifies the five purposes that ancient societies had for welcoming adolescents into their roles as adults. Called “initiation rites,” these practices told young people, “These are the important things you need to know if you are going to be a blessing to others (and yourself). These five “knowings” seem to be especially relevant to us today as we move impatiently through the phases of opening up our lives again.

A. Life is hard.

B. You are not all that important.

C. Life is not about you.

D. You are not in control.

E. You are going to die someday.

Scripture:

Now, let’s pair each one with a scriptural truth that profoundly balances each one with who we are in Christ. Take the time to think about each one. Be encouraged!

1. It is true that life is hard, and yet my yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28).

2. It is true that you are not important, and yet do you not know that your name is written in heaven? (Luke 10:20).

3. It is true that your life is not about you, and yet I live now not my own life, but the life of Christ who lives in me (Galatians 2:20).

4. It is true that you are not in control, and yet can any of you, for all of your worrying, add a single moment to your span of life? (Luke 12:26).

5. It is true that you are going to die, and yet neither death nor life...can ever come between us and the love of God (Romans 8:38-39).
