This Then Is How You Should Pray: The Lord’s Prayer In The Time Of Coronavirus (4)

Introduction: Did you know that each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer was found as parts of prayers written down in the Dead Sea Scrolls? This means that Jewish people were praying these phrases even BEFORE the time of Jesus. Because each phrase already meant something special to the people, I believe this makes it even more The Lord’s Prayer. Let’s take a look at each phrase from the Jewish point of view from just before Jesus’ birth.

Scripture: Matthew 6:9-13

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 1 Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.

Reflection:

· “Give us today our daily bread”: No Jew could hear this phrase without hearing the echo of the story of God providing manna in the wilderness. “Pick up ONLY what you need for one day,” God told them. OK, imagine you are hungrier than at any time in your entire life. Manna has never come before. Do you believe it will come tomorrow, just because God said it would? Really? “Father, give me today what I need for today, and help me trust you for tomorrow."

The Prayer For Today:

Father, you are gracious and compassionate. You love us no matter what. We know that you are very close by, that you personally and intimately know our needs, our sufferings. What’s more, we know that you control and direct all things according to your will. Protect us with your mighty power, direct us to walk in your ways, and keep us from being overcome both physically and economically, by this pandemic.

Father, every day and in every way, help us to represent the holiness of your name in the way we live our lives. Help us to demonstrate love to others and treat them as you would treat them. Father, we realize that for a while this may mean we need to wear a face mask in public, or honor our friends and family by not risking infection. We trust you to help us, Father.

Father, we need your courage, wisdom and compassion to bring shalom to your world. Help us today to work toward restoring the world to the way you want it to be. Amen.

We trust you Father. Help us overcome our untrusting nature. We do not know how or if or when the economy will rebound, and now many do not have jobs, or enough work to make ends meet. Father, we simply ask you to give us today what we need for today, and help us to trust you for tomorrow.
