This Then Is How You Should Pray: The Lord’s Prayer In The Time Of Coronavirus

Introduction: Did you know that each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer was found as parts of prayers written down in the Dead Sea Scrolls? This means that Jewish people were praying these phrases even BEFORE the time of Jesus. Because each phrase already meant something special to the people, I believe this makes it even more The Lord’s Prayer. Let’s take a look at each phrase from the Jewish point of view from just before Jesus’ birth.

Scripture: Matthew 6:9-13

“This, then, is how you should pray:"

“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 1Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

·“Our”: belonging to us as a people, collectively. The Father is “gracious and compassionate, abounding in love.” Exodus 34:6

·"Father”: recognizing not just “coming from” in a “biological” sense, “father” often was used to convey like characteristics. Being a “daughter of your heavenly father” meant that you were seeking to honor His ways in all aspects of your life.

·“in heaven”: To a Jew, heaven was NOT a faraway place where the Father lived a life separate from his people. Rather, heaven is that unseen world, very close by, that serves as the control room of the universe. Your heavenly father, “who is among you.” Deuteronomy 6:15

The Prayer For Today:

Father, you are gracious and compassionate. You love us no matter what. We know that you are very close by, that you personally and intimately know our needs, our sufferings. What’s more, we know that you control and direct all things according to your will. As we seek to honor you in all our ways, protect us with your mighty power, direct us to walk in your ways, and keep us from being overcome, both physically and economically, by this pandemic. Amen.
