Reflection

The first weekend in March, in Chicago, just before the pandemic hit in force, our third granddaughter, Eva Hope, was born. Coming home from the hospital on Sunday, she immediately joined her two older sisters and her parents in lock-down. Since that first Sunday in March when we returned to Holland, it has been complete shelter-in-place for Eva and her family; my wife and I the only “outside” persons in the house the entire time. Meanwhile, the Coronavirus rages with almost 9000 cases and 300 deaths in Chicago alone as of this writing.

Eva knows nothing of this. She is composed, free from discontent, resting and growing in the knowledge and security of her family. “Of course”, you say, “she’s just a child.” Exactly. Let’s remind ourselves that as bad as things are today, the Biblical writers and the people of God experienced much the same (and worse) on a regular basis. Listen to the psalmists, prophets and gospel writers. Rest. Be still. Know. Trust. Acknowledge. Exalt.

Scripture:

“Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty; nor do I involve myself in great matters, or in things too difficult for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me.” Psalm 131:1-2

“For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel has said this, “In returning and rest you shall be saved, in quietness and confident trust is your strength.” Isaiah 30:15

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:16

“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

Does Eva “know” something we don’t?
