Contentment

Reflection:

“A text out of context is a pretext for trouble.” (Dan Walcott.) Today’s passage is about being content, but it is attached to one of the most “out-of-context” quoted verses in all of scripture. “I can do all this (or, things) through him who gives me strength.”

Back to contentment. I am not very good at it. Are you? Even though I am one of the most materially wealthy people that ever lived. (If you are middle class in America today, this is true of you, too.). But I am still bummed about not being able to travel. As I write this I am “supposed” to be in Spain.

But listen to Paul. “

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Then comes the outlandishly misquoted, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Phil. 4:12-13

So what is it that Paul can do “through him who gives me strength? Be content! In any and every situation. Wow! As we move through another week of “Stay Home, Stay Safe, Save Lives” do you need practice applying the “secret of being content in any and every situation”? I do. And I’m not misquoting here Mr. Dan Walcott, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

And finally, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Phil. 4:19-20

Scripture:
