Unprecedented: the word of the month. Indeed, it IS unprecedented the number of times I have heard and read the word “unprecedented” in the last month. (Thankfully, what I have not heard is, “This is a plague of biblical proportions!”)

Really? Not to diminish our challenges here, which must rank in the top tier of those our generation has faced. But let me offer some perspective.

·1347-1351 The Black Death killed between 75 and 200 million people, reducing the entire world population by 25% and that of Europe by 50%

·1914-1918 WWI: 18 million soldiers and civilians died

·1919 Spanish flu killed 50 million people

·1939-1945 WWII killed 20 million soldiers and 40 million civilians, including the extermination of 8 million Jews in the Holocaust. One bomb (Hiroshima) killed over 100,000 human beings.

· God says to Abraham, “and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed …” Genesis 22:18

· The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

· For God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16

· “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him." Mark 16:6

· When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [as the Spirit enabled them]. Acts 2:1-4

Unprecedented? Indeed!

Finally, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
