Brokenness and sonship

Scripture

Romans 8:22-24

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

Reflection

Brokenness

“The whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth….we ourselves …. groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.” Have you noticed? Our world is broken, fallen from shalom, not the way God intended it to be! Today’s brokenness is obvious, evident, pervasive, and PHYSICAL. Most of us respond with, “We need to stop this. We need to DO something!” And we act. Most of us.

Fact is our world was already broken; racism, pornography, greed, abortion, worshiping mammon (money), violence, gossip and slander; SPIRITUAL brokenness Today, COVID-19 shakes us into the reality of our brokenness. Before? Not so much. And if we do not realize we are sick, believing everything is “fine” and “under control,” we take no action.

Yes, the whole creation is / has been groaning! But here is the good news. For we, God’s people are adopted into sonship! Sons do their father’s work, in this case to help restore wholeness to His wonderful world. (Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.- John 10:37) Let us allow this PHYSICAL brokenness to spur us on with renewed enthusiasm to attack the pervasive spiritual brokenness of our time. For it, like COVID

-19 without symptoms, lurks just below the surface, effectively infecting many.
