Below is a list of various areas that a number of early elementary teachers thought are NEEDED for kindergarten entrance.

General Knowledge/Thinking

  • Can recognize name in print
  • Can state full name
  • Can answer general information, ex “What color is a banana?”
  • Can identify body parts
  • Knows the function of some body parts: eyes, ears, nose mouth

Attention/Listening

  • Will attend to a speaker/reader (15-20 min)
  • Can follow directions, and a few simple commands
  • Can concentrate on one activity for a short time (15 min)
  • Can repeat simple sentences of 5-6 words

Language

  • Understands/speaks good vocabulary, converses with children and adults of 5 year old

Motivation

  • Has an interest in learning colors, shapes, numbers and letters
  • Has an interest in counting objects and counting by memory
  • Has an interest in books, hearing them read, and looking at them

Numerical

  • Can count by memory to 5 to 10

Social, Emotional, Behavioral Characteristics regarding self

  • Will leave parents/home comfortably for a few hours
  • Can adjust to a new situation
  • Can play/work independently for a short time (10-15 min)
  • Can manage bathroom routines
  • Has good eating and sleeping habits

Attention/Listening

  • Can repeat directions
  • Can repeat up to 4 numerals

Language

  • Can speak fluently and clearly, using simple sentences
  • Can identify colors by name

Motivation

  • Is curious, ask questions
  • Can work independently on things of interest

Numerical

  • Can count objects to 5
  • Recognizes some numbers 1-10
  • Identifies basic shapes

Alphabet/Letters

  • Recites alphabet
  • Identifies many letters

Social, Emotional, Behavioral Characteristics regarding self

  • Will accept correction
  • Will apologize
  • Is not afraid to make a mistake
  • Can control talking
  • Has a healthy self-concept, feels secure and loved
